Head of Facebook’s secretive lab is leaving

The head of Facebook’s secretive cutting-edge hardware lab, Building 8, is exiting after only a year and a half.

In her announcement, Regina Dugan said of her departure, “There is a tidal shift going on in Silicon Valley, and those of us in this industry have greater responsibilities than ever before,” adding, “The timing feels right to step away and be purposeful about what’s next, thoughtful about new ways to contribute in times of disruption.”

Dugan was a former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the special research lab that builds new technology for the US military. She later became a top exec at Google before joining Facebook in early 2016 to start up Building 8 with a budgetary commitment from the company of hundreds of millions of dollars.

The division has yet to produce a marketable product. However, in April Dugan unveiled a “brain computer interface project” to developers which can translate human thoughts onto a computer screen.
